Tree Nursery Open Day

Saturday 23rd October 10.00am – 3.00pm

Exmoor National Park Authority are in the process of making a community tree nursery in Exford, and we are holding a drop-in open day in Exford this Saturday. We’ll be in the auction field behind Exford School, opposite the Crown Hotel.

We’ll be collecting tree seeds from the area and processing them so they can be stored over winter, for growing on in the nursery next spring. If you have any seeds already collected (or could collect) then bring them along and we’ll help you process them (different seeds need different treatments). Make sure you have permission to collect from any private land and label your collections with a rough location and, ideally, the species.

We’re quite short on oak trees this year so any acorns would be great, but you are more likely to find rowan, hawthorn, sloes and sycamore (no ash seeds please). If you have fleshy fruits such as hawthorn, rowan or sloe, bringing a mixing bowl to squash them in (to get the seeds out) would be great.

We’ll also have some contractors onsite, cleaving chestnut to make a fence to go around the new tree nursery, and our woodlands team will be there to talk through plans for the nursery.

The whole event will be outside and will be run as a drop in event, so turn up for as much or little time as you want. Park in the public car park and follow the path away from the village.

Hope to see you there,
