ASIAN HORNETS FOUND IN SOMERSET

On August 25^th a beekeeper in Aisholt on the Quantocks identified Asian Hornets hawking his bees.

He sent a photo via the app “REPORT ASIAN HORNET ” and a team from the N. B U. arrived the same day and began searching for the nest. Using advanced technology (attaching a tracer to captured hornets)

They could track the direction of flight and eventually located the nest on August 28^th which was destroyed. Hornets hunt within a radius of 700 meters of their nest.

Asian Hornets are very aggressive, their stings are very painful and lower the victims blood pressure. They can sting multiple times as can wasps.

Asian Hornets predate on all insect life and their larva can consume 12 to 13 kilos of insects in a season, they especially target bee hives so have the potential to devastate all our insect population.
