Timberscombe village and parish magazine – relaunched February 2024 – please renew or sign up now.

This new monthly version of the Dunkery Tidings is available whether by an annual payment of £6 (due now), or a one-off purchase at 60p per copy from the Post Office.

Our aim is to make the Dunkery Tidings a really useful one-stop guide to village businesses as well as events happening and news from our school, village hall, Parish Council, The Lion Inn, St Petrock’s Church, Good Neighbours, The Old Dairy and elsewhere. Useful contacts are also regularly included.

I have been asked by a number of people if I could organise a group to extend the work begun with the Advent Event and other readings I have organised here.  The focus will be on understanding poetry as “language in performance”, as something to be read aloud, to be experienced rather than merely understood.  After all, nobody ever asks the “meaning” of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony or The Girl With a Pearl Earing but they move us just the same.

The group will be open to all ranges of experience.  All you will need is an open mind, an ability to feel the power and beauty of language and a willingness to explore these in a group of like-minded fellows in a beautiful building with a lovely accoustic.

I have over thirty year’s teaching experience, coached for the RADA Shakespeare Qualification, and was involved with the Shakespeare Schools Festival for ten years.  I don’t know all the answers but I have a range of useful and effective questions gathered over the years and would be glad to share them as they have enriched my life in good times and bad.

St Petrock’s Church is offering Thursday afternoons for the group.  If you would be interested please get a message to me regarding your interest and the possible frequency of meetings.  I shall be at the Thursday morning Warm Welcome on the first Thursday of February.  I shall not be asking for any money for the meetings but  St Petrock’s would appreciate a donation for the upkeep and heating of the church.

You are most welcome to join us for a presentation by Dr Ellen Wiles of the University of Exeter, who has worked in collaboration with Ben Eardley of The National Trust (who gave our last lecture about the work undertaken at Holnicote to re-create the water landscape) There is no charge for this meeting. Keith retired as village postman last Saturday 6th January after more than 6 years of delivering the post and so much more for all the villagers in Timberscombe. He will be much missed. Sarah Campbell at the Post Office organised a village collection and then presentation on Saturday which is shown here. Keith has now sent a wonderful thank you and flowers to the village which can be seen in the Post Office. I publish below what Keith wrote in his card of appreciation:

I am overwhelmed! It has been my pleasure to serve the community of Timberscombe and surroiunding area, for over six years. Together we have formed friendships and been there for each other. Through Covid 19 when i was probably the only one to visit your door, and pass on info and assist where I could, to now back to normal. It has been my honour to support this great community and has also been a great deal of fun!

I want to say thank you for your generosity and kindness at this my retiring time. There are individuals who struggle on a daily basis , who still manage a smile, when I call. I will not be a stranger, and pop up to annoy you all, when I can. Tis a good place with great people and we have laughed.
