Message from Wessex Water

Dear Customers

The UK has experienced one of the driest springs in 132 years, and as temperatures rise, so does our collective demand for water. The Environment Agency has now moved our region into what’s known as “Prolonged Dry Weather” status.

We’re not currently planning to introduce a hosepipe ban or other restrictions, but this change is a clear signal that we all need to do our bit to make sure there’s enough water to go around. Every drop counts and your actions matter

We’re not asking you to stop using water, just to use it wisely. Small changes at home can make a big difference – especially when we all do them together:

·        Take shorter showers

·        Use your washing machine and dishwasher only when full

·        Check for hidden leaks around your property

·        Let your lawn go brown. As soon as the rain returns it will go back to normal

These simple steps help protect our water supplies and, if you’re on a water meter, can save you money too.

What we’re doing to help

Hot, dry weather means less water goes into our reservoirs. River flows, groundwater, and reservoir levels are all lower than usual.

We’re working hard behind the scenes to keep water flowing, upgrading infrastructure, and fixing leaks.

If you spot a damp patch on the pavement or a trickle from a utility cover, let us know. Our teams will find it and fix it.

Craft Group

Craft Group meetings will be moving to Thursdays.

From next Thursday, 14th August, we will meet from 2pm – 4pm at The Old Dairy Community Centre. We will meet each week apart from the first Thursday in the month. We welcome any new faces that wish to join us.

There will no longer be Craft Group on Tuesdays

Porlock Repair Café

The Repair Café has now been running for just over 3 years and during that time has managed to repair over 1,000 items, 82% of all items brought in.

We have 15 volunteer repairers who can tackle most items, we would love to try and restore an item for you, or at least confirm it’s time to let it go for something new!

If you are unsure whether we have a volunteer who can look at your item, & want to check before bringing it in, please email us at 4rsporlockvale@gmail.com  with details of your item & we can advise you.

Types of items repaired, although not exhaustive:

Clothes Furniture Electrical appliances
Toys Tools Sharpening
Mechanical Phones Electronics

We are open 10am to 12 noon at Porlock Village Hall.

Whilst you are waiting to see a repairer you can take advantage of, for a small contribution, the available coffee, tea & cakes. Actually, we have a few people who come in just for the homemade cakes and a chat with friends.

The Somerset Fixy van was with us for our May event & collected 38KG of electrical items, these items will have their data wiped and either be re-issued to someone in need or the key material will be extracted for re-use. This included:

  • 14 phones
  • 5 laptops
  • 6 tablets

If you have any similar items, you no longer need, then you can still can donate unwanted Smart Tech at the Donate IT drop-off point at Minehead Eye, 1 Mart Road, Minehead, Somerset, TA24 5BJ. Mon-Fri 10am-8pm, Sat-Sun 10am-4pm.
