Peter Wright’s 1985 production of this quintessential Romantic ballet is a classic of The Royal Ballet repertory. Set to Adolphe Adam’s evocative score and with atmospheric designs by John Macfarlane, Giselle conjures up the earthly and otherworldly realms in a tale of love, betrayal and redemption.

A complacent family, desperate to hang on to its position in local society and awaiting the return of its only son; fresh from his travels, he presents his new wife – an older woman from who knows where?  Easy Virtue is sharp and sassy, and a forgotten gem in the Coward repertoire.

SOMERSET OPERA

Monday 30 March – 7.30pm

Somerset Opera returns with Gilbert & Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance.  Following last year’s highly successful HMS Pinafore it will again be directed by Sarah Helsby-Hughes (who also directs at Buxton) with music from Sam Baker.

Barrie Kosky directs the third chapter of Wagner’s Ring cycle, featuring Andreas Schager as Siegfried, Christopher Maltman as Wanderer, Peter Hoare as Mime, and Elisabet Strid as Brünnhilde. Antonio Pappano conducts.
