Winter Heating
Two representatives, Cheryl and Chloe, from the Minehead branch of the Citizens Advice Bureau came out to address those at our Warm Welcome in St Petrock’s on Thursday 3rd October.
They spoke to us all, explaining about Pension Credit and how just being entitled to this pension top up then entitled you to the heating allowance, along with some other benefits in some instances (eg council tax reduction). They were also helpful with tips for those struggling with energy bills and pointed out that many energy companies could offer reduced tariffs and electric blankets for free.
Most importantly, they made it clear that CAB were open to anyone talking to them and in all cases they would even help complete the paperwork. Residents needn’t worry if they are not on-line and they needn’t fear if they struggle with reading or writing.
They also mentioned a fund that they control directly, but which will be discontinued in future. This has roughly £40,000 in it, and they want to distribute it wisely. One idea is elderly residents could apply for a 500lt delivery of oil. It was not clear if there were any criteria that needed to be met for a person to qualify. For anyone struggling, they should ask!
There was a huge amount of information to take on board, but they were very open and approachable. Their office is open most weekdays (but not Tuesdays, although they are still there to man the phones)

The CAB are keen and willing to help the elderly make sure they get that to which they are entitled if they are at all concerned about their heating bills. Kate Hart is happy for residents to contact her (01643 841745) if they feel unable to speak directly to CAB.
Thank you to our volunteers for providing refreshments to everyone.
