The West Somerset Lagoon

The West Somerset Lagoon is a proposed power scheme that aims to harness the energy of the tides to provide reliable, predictable, renewable energy. Led by specialists with over 50 years of expertise in the water, hydropower and marine works sector, the West Somerset Lagoon Project team has a proven track record in delivering major energy and marine engineering projects and brings extensive knowledge in engineering design, master planning, and architecture.

The Project team have launched a public consultation to find out what local people think about the proposed development. There will be drop-in sessions announced in due course, where you can ask questions in person. In the meantime, you can find out more about the scheme and take part in an online survey by clicking this link. The deadline for survey submissions is Easter 2026. Cutcombe Road Repairs

Following extensive consultation over recent weeks with stakeholders, event organisers, and community groups, a revised approach has been agreed for the upcoming works on the A396 Cutcombe Hill.

The works will commence during the week of 9th February 2026. To minimise disruption—including reducing the impact on the Snowdrop Valley event, which runs throughout January and February—the contractor will undertake the works during night-time hours. This will allow the carriageway to reopen during the daytime to support visitor access and local traffic. Temporary traffic lights will remain in place during the day.

This revised plan has also been coordinated closely with the A39 Dunster traffic signal upgrade, ensuring that both projects proceed without compounding disruption on key local routes. By aligning timings, we aim to maintain resilience across the network and avoid simultaneous closures or conflicting traffic management.

The scope of the works remains unchanged: a stronger and more reliable solution will be installed using king pin concrete anchors with a supporting concrete beam to ensure the long-term stability of the road. The duration of the works is expected to be approximately three weeks.

The road will be closed between 19:00 and 07:00 from 9th February until 27th February. Each day,the road will reopen between 07:00 to 19:00 with two-way traffic signals in place to manage traffic safely. If works finish earlier than expected, the road will be fully reopened as soon as practicable.

We recognise how important both this route and the Snowdrop Valley period are to the community, local economy, and visitors. Thank you for your patience and cooperation while we deliver these vital improvements.

Official communications will be issued over the coming days. If you have any questions or require further details, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Yours faithfully,

Kali Martin, Assistant Highway Service Manager
